The Person

Background: Yoshida was unlike most shinobi when studying at the Academy in Kusagakure.  Most had found some sort of affinity for a specialty, whether that be slicing with a katana, practicing kicks and punches to learn taijutsu, developing elemental techniques or their clans ninjutsu, or even sharpening their mind to prepare for genjutsu techniques.  Yet every time Yoshida seemed to try, his techniques were met with failure.  Embarrassed by his lack of talent, especially compared to the success of his parents within the village, he sought refuge in his grandfather’s home.

A craftsman at heart, Ryotaro brought his grandchild into his workshop, a menagerie of puppet arms, legs and torsos scattering across the room.  It was here that Yoshida began studying the art of puppet making, from creating weapons and hidden mechanisms, to forming the entire assembly with his grandfather, creating seals to store the puppets, and eventually learning how to control the puppet with threads of chakra from his hand.  It wasn’t long before he eventually became a Genin within the village and began using his creations on missions.  Unfortunately, his grandfather would not see much of his success, passing away from old age shortly after Yoshida graduated from the academy.

For a few years, Yoshida continued to search through Ryotaro’s journal, seeking out his ideas on new mechanisms and ideas for puppets.  Everything from flame launching apparatuses, to water devices, to creations that could deploy shields of condensed chakra at will.  It would take him years to pilfer through all of his grandfather’s ideas, and he hoped to continue to make adjustments to his puppets as time went on.

It wasn’t until a cruel day when one of his teammates, Akaito, was killed while training in the village with rogue shinobi.  Carrying him in his arms, Yoshida raced back to the workshop to see if there was anything he could do for him.  Suffering from fatal wounds, Akaito bled across the table, his body slowly failing him until the last beat of his heart.  Scrambling around the last papers of his grandfather, he found a concept for a different sort of puppet, one that required a human body.

It took him all night to create, but he was able to do it.  While he couldn’t save Akaito’s life, he could preserve his legacy in the best way he knew how, as a puppet.  He also realized that he could use many of the jutsu Akaito knew, and this made him even more of a threat.  As village leaders investigate the use of Yoshida’s newest creation, they began to suspect treason and betrayal, rather than utilizing the remains of a dead shinobi.  Yoshida left the village, in fear of being interrogated and killed, and has been exploring the various lands ever since.  He currently is in search of a workshop to call his own, and bodies of famous deceased shinobi.  Hopefully he can make use of their former talents, and help ensure peace across the warring villages within these lands.

Personality:  Yoshida is a rather upbeat and excitable ninja, eager to meet new shinobi and help out wherever he can.  As a rogue shinobi, he chooses simply to help out who he thinks is in need, rather than to pursue the path of a criminal.  He enjoys learning about the history of shinobi, and exploring the lands for both treasure, and the deceased bodies of shinobi.  He finds that his making of bodies into puppets preserves their legacy much better than if they were in the ground.  Calm and collected, and always thinking about what to do next, Yoshida is eager to find a place of belonging, and to clear up his misunderstood past.

Roleplay

Alternate Characters: First Character
Roleplay Sample:  It was a late night near the outskirts of Takigakure, weaving in and out of various buildings and fields.  He lucked out when a patrol of shinobi didn’t seem to notice his presence, perhaps they were too occupied with another target.  Running over the meadows, he came upon a building with a dim light, and a few windows.  Peering inside, he saw shelves from floor to ceiling, filled with different colored scrolls of varying size and length.  Quietly picking up one foot after the other, he slowly touched the handle of the door, turned it ever so slightly, and made his way inside.

Yoshida found himself alone within the room, suspecting he wouldn’t have much time if there was a candle lit on the desk.  He thought to himself, “Where would I put a scroll about the Tragedy of the 1st Gokage summit?”  Every other topic was cataloged throughout the room, from different ninja techniques, to how best to grow rice and vegetables, to the principles of leadership.  He couldn’t seem to put his hand on the scroll he was looking for, until he made his way further back to a new shelf.  He found an ornate red scroll with a golden trim, with a seal that read, “The Death of the Firsts.”

He pried open the seal and began to read, “The First Gokage summit was met with tragedy as all villages were sent the bodies of their Kage, along with any of the aides that came as well.  The services for each of the shinobi who fell in the line of duty are listed below.”  As Yoshida continued to read, he found the locations of their final resting places and other defining features of their monuments.  Tucking the scroll into one of his pouches, he made his way out of the building, and thought, “Hopefully they haven’t decayed too much.  I need their power in my collection.”
