Basic InfoBirthdate: March 10 Age: 24 Gender: Male Blood Type: AB Height: 5'8" Weight: 150 lbs Appearance: Kozai is a moderately-sized person, kinda wiry and lean. He has an angular face with well-toned skin and high cheekbones, someone who WOULD have been handsome in the '60s, but who might seem kinda awkward nowadays. He has brown hair, which is almost always slightly ruffled (Kozai sleeps in a lot), and green eyes, which are filled with the kind of celebration that you'd find around your typical holiday. Outside of this, however, Kozai keeps his fingernails and other secondary hygiene aspects well-groomed (no point in getting annoying dirt in odd places), and has a medium build. He generally wears a different outfit every day, which is one of the many things that has the elders of his village shaking their heads and calling him a "wacko" or an "eccentric". The PersonBackground: Kozai was one of the clanless children of Takigakure, and as such, had no bloodline to rely on. It was easy enough to get bullied for not having that "extra advantage" to reach the martial peak, back then. Still, Kozai was one of those idiots who never gave up. Neither was he a person to be angry for long. As such, since the teasing and hazing didn't really bother him, it soon ceased. Kozai still didn't like the fact that it happened to those who didn't belong to the "big clans", but he couldn't do anything about it yet. Still, there was no point in sitting around and doing nothing either, right? Those who denied that there was any future for them were worse than trash. Only people who could reach the martial peak, even without inherent advantages like "bloodline limits", were even remotely worthy of praise. Even if it took his entire lifetime, even if it consumed him, he'd try his very hardest. Sounds trite so far, right? Even though Kozai was a nice person, that didn't mean that he wasn't... well, kind of Machiavellian. If something REALLY pissed him off, or if something obstructed his path, he'd do anything it took to get rid of it. Take, for example, early on in his genin years. Bankrupting and out-competing textbook dealers is a good way to get things for cheap. It became evident as time went on that Kozai was rather strange. He was a bit too happy. Not in the creepy aspect, mind you, but... well, it's like in Candide, by Voltaire. There's a point at which it's socially awkward and strange to be so cheerful. As such, he was alienated even more than he was in his younger years, as he progressed slowly up the ranks. Despite the flaws in his personality, the leadership soon saw that this was someone who had little innate talent, but was willing to really work his ass off. Well, they were wrong. Kozai's talent may not have been in his DNA, but it certainly was in his mind. As someone who perceived the universe in a different way than most other people, he was practically guaranteed success. As mentioned before, Kozai got rid of anything in his way, so it was no surprise that when the kage spot became vacant, he began to formulate a plan to get that seat. It involved as little death, manipulation and murder as possible... then again, people made it hard for him to stick to that. Personality: As mentioned before, Kozai is a "hopeless optimist". It even means, to a small extent, that he sees weird lights-at-the-end-of-tunnels in situations that are clearly hopeless. This isn't without its exceptions though. Just because he's optimistic and happy most of the time doesn't mean he's always nice. Once again, he cares more for himself and his village than for individuals in need who have nothing to do with him. At any rate, Kozai's frighteningly analytical, even while keeping a real and genuine smile on his face. The only time he REALLY frowns is when he's forced to rely on something that he knows relatively little about. In other words, he shares something in common with the rest of humanity: a lack of comfort with the unknown. His attitude toward other people is less strange. He loves to meet people and to make bonds and friendships, since he feels that the more people he knows, the better. It's certainly helped him in his lifetime, so he knows better than to live in isolation. In combat, however, he tries his best to deprive his opponent of every advantage possible, making his victory assured and absolute. No sense in giving yourself a handicap, right? The rain... well, that was why this village was called what it was. The endless downpour of liquid water that defined the identity of the people and the very place itself. Kozai was, even after all these weeks, still managing to suppress his chakra to levels that would be undifferentiable from that of a normal civilian. Even the best of chakra sensors wouldn't be able to recognize that he had once been the leader of a village, and especially not that he was a former researcher. They would not have been able to tell that he had even been a man who could take the strongest of punches.
Kozai had given up.
After years of work, illness, stress and duty, he had lost his ambition to learn of new bloodlines. Lost now, as well, was his other self, completely drained away during the doldrum days in Ame. His lab coat and katana, Hyakkasou, were hung up in his hut. At least, when he wasn't maintaining them. Oddly enough, he felt content. Somehow, it brought him a feeling of peace to not have to always be thinking about a hard problem, even though his subconcious was always analyzing, always looking for the details and making calculations. Well, that was the consequence of being a ninja.
At the moment, he was standing at the doorway of his hut. He wore dark civilian clothing, a loose black T-shirt and pants. His shoes were worn, a result of the garden he was cultivating a little closer to the wall. At first, he was going to do some experiments on the plants... but then, he lost all desire for it. As mentioned before, he had given up. For him, there was no longer much point in doing scientific inquiry. He had changed that much in the time that had passed.
He gazed up at the sky, the rain running down his hair and face, looking at the clouds.
"About 1.6 inches of rain", he mumbled, barely registering that he was doing so. "Classified as 'heavy' rain. Predicted an additional .3 inches by nightfall, perhaps .5, leading to... violent rain." At that point, he realized he was talking to himself. He stopped mumbling. He knew it was a bad habit, especially now that he had actual neighbors. The destitute people out here he would have once despised, but now he felt a form of unity with them.
They thought that he was some kind of strange madman who had come to town. His strange behavior and incomprehensible (at least, to them) mumblings would make him seem insane to these folk. He hadn't socialized with them, as he told himself, because they would reject him, as an "odd one". However, this was just an excuse. Deep down inside, he knew he was afraid of them. Not because of the possibility that they could overpower them, but because they were strange to him. He had never, in his life, been forced into an environment of civilians. And now... he was the odd one out.
He lowered his head to a level position, scanning the area almost out of habit. He fluxed his chakra slightly, almost undetectably. He longed to use his techniques again, to be even a healer, a doctor, someone who he used to detest the most... but couldn't. Slowly, Kozai was losing not only his drive to learn, but also his drive to live.
